SAFETY CONCERNSseptember 2009OUR SAFETY CONCERNS THIS ISSUEWINTERSnow Chains! - Have you seen the notice posted in the driver's room about Colorado requiring chains as of Sep 1st west of Denver on I-70? They moved the carry law up from Nov to Sep this year. No, it's NOT Winter, yet!? - Man! I HATE to talk about Winter already. But, where did the Summer go this year? Colorado is already requiring you to carry chains on I-70! Last year I got caught, in the Fall, going up into Alberta, with no coat! I only had my lightweight, unlined jacket. I just didn't want it to be Winter yet. It got really cold that trip and I had to buy a warm jacket at a truckstop! Try to be prepared for anything when you leave. Passing ZonesPassing - Maybe I have been driving wrong all these years, and you were already aware of this, but if you are like me... I was stopped the other day, in Louisiana by a Stae Police Officer, because, he said, I passed on a double yellow line. I did pass several vehicles on a yellow line, but all the vehicles were stopped. I was under the impression the vehicles had to be moving for it to be considered "passing". Two trucks had the lane blocked trying to get into a terminal, the on-coming lane was clear for at least a mile, so I went around them... 'course, one of the vehicles waiting for the trucks to get into their lot was the State Policeman! He said I should have waited for the lane to get clear, so, I guess, if a car is broken down in your lane and it's a "no Passing zone, you are required to wait for the tow truck to get there and move the car before you can legally go on... at least in Louisiana! Well, that's it for this time. Hey, hey, hey!! Let's be safe out there! Kenny Jenkins |
